Desert & Mountain

The Turkish element of this project involved a 600km walk, from the Black Sea Coast to the Meditteranean, via 3 mountain ranges. Spread over 21 nights; 4 hotels, 4 beds in local homes and 1 army camp, the rest of the time under olive trees.

I followed the ancient caravan routes, covering approximately 45kms on walk days, which when the routes were active was considered a good distance for a caravan to traverse between stops.

The Israel and Egypt element included;

  • A 200km walk along the West Bank of the River Nile, from Luxor to Aswan, making pinhole images as I walked, which were released in the book 'A Velvet Silence'. The walk took 8 days and was self supported, with nights spent in mosques, local houses and by the Nileside.
  • A 300km walk across the Sinai Desert, coast to coast following the probable course of the Exodus via Serabit el Khadim and Mt Sinai to Dahab (Dizahab in the Old Testament). The walk took 12 days and was self supported, with all nights spent outside and water gained from wells and rock clefts.
  • A 250km walk from the Egyptian border to Jerusalem via Palestine. The walk took 18 days and was self supported, with all nights spent outside.
  • A 60km walk through the Great Sand Sea. The walk took 5 days and was self supported, with all nights spent outside.

Here are some portraits made during the walks using Illford Film
